Inspiring the Next Generation: Clayton Stephenson’s Season with HSO
Music has the power to transform lives, and through the Joyce C. Willis Artist in Residence program, underwritten by the Roberts Foundation for the Arts, the Hartford Symphony Orchestra is bringing that power directly to students across our community. This season, we have been honored to welcome pianist Clayton Stephenson, whose passion and artistry have ignited curiosity, creativity, and confidence in young musicians across Connecticut.
From elementary school classrooms to high school auditoriums, Clayton’s visits have been a masterclass in musical storytelling. Whether demonstrating how composers capture the sounds of everyday life, coaching students on breaking down complex music into playable parts, or sharing how emotion shapes performance, he has inspired students to see music as more than just notes on a page.
Most recently, Clayton captivated audiences at the Artists Collective, where 10-year-old student London interviewed him about his early inspirations, he accompanied the Collective’s Praise Dance Group in He Lives in You from The Lion King, and he delivered a stunning performance of Stravinsky’s Petrushka that brought the crowd to its feet.
