Gene Bozzi is the Principal Timpanist in the Hartford Symphony Orchestra. He has been a soloist with the orchestra in Milhaud’s Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra and Bartok’s Sonata for Piano and Percussion with Emmanuel Ax. Since college, Gene has performed in many area jazz groups in concert and club settings. As the house drummer in Hartford, he has played with Dave Liebman and Steve Swallow. Gene has also appeared with Gerry Mulligan in a concert performance of Mulligan’s Birth of the Cool compositions. His interest in Brazilian music brought him together with Brazilian pianist Catalina to form the jazz group Samba Brasil. He has performed Brazilian jazz with the Claudio Roditi Quartet and toured Russia with the Hendrik Muerkins Quartet in 2007. Gene is the creator and Artistic Director for the HSO Jazz and Strings Series. Performances have included the Stan Getz piece “Focus” and “Charlie Parker with Strings”. He is a percussion instructor at Wesleyan University and Trinity College, and serves as the Music Department Chair at the Greater Hartford Academy of the Arts.
