Education Programs

Our education offerings provide engaging musical experiences led by our talented HSO musicians. Our programs, including school coaching, masterclasses, and in- school performances work within the classrooms to link music to learning. This takes place in the orchestra room, band room and classrooms as students gain a deeper connection to how music is integrated into their curriculum.

Our Chamber Ensembles, comprised of our exceptional musicians, represent the four instrument families. These programs incorporate stories and lessons that highlight musical interplay and educational elements.

HSO Discovery Concerts introduce elementary and middle school students (K-8) to the world of orchestral music through original, interactive weekday performances, held at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Learn more

Link Up, a national program in partnership with Carnegie Hall, is a yearlong collaboration that teaches students to play the recorder and ends in a celebratory concert where everyone plays alongside the orchestra. This coordinated effort includes the third grade students of Hartford and East Hartford Public Schools and is a wonderful HSO tradition we are proud to continue.

Instrument Discovery Lab and music-themed crafts for children and families take place annually at each of our Talcott Mountain Music Festival concerts and other community events. Children try string and percussion instrumetns and create musical art, offering a hands-on way to build early connections to the symphony.

We partner with schools to develop lifelong music lovers, providing classroom opportunities that enhance the educational experience of students. HSO Musicians are brought directly into classrooms across Hartford and Greater Hartford, connecting with students through culturally relevent programming, live performances, and Question & Answer sessions.

The HSO’s Young Artists Competition is an elite concerto competition open to all Connecticut residents in grades 9-12. Contestants compete for cash awards and a chance to solo with the HSO at The Bushnell. Learn More
