The Hartford Symphony Orchestra’s Annual Meeting was an inspiring evening, celebrating an exceptional 2023-2024 season filled with musical growth, dedicated teamwork, and multiple achievements. Chairman Robert Bausmith opened the meeting by reflecting on the year’s accomplishments, including an updated dress code, a new musician contract, and robust education programs, despite challenges like a $600K deficit. New directors Lalitha Shivaswamy and Tony Falcetti were warmly welcomed to the Board, and the Class of 2027 was unanimously elected. Additionally, retiring board members were honored for their years of service, highlighting the board’s continued commitment to the Symphony’s mission.
Music Director Carolyn Kuan shared heartfelt remarks on the power of music in today’s world, connecting mindfulness and community through performance. She presented Principal Bass Edward “Rick” Rozie with the Musician Award for his 50 years of outstanding musicianship. Board Member Kristen Phillips honored retiring cellist Carole Olefsky, celebrating her 53-year legacy with the HSO. The evening featured a beautiful performance by HSO Musician Fellow Esther Benjamin, as well as CEO Stephen Collins’ updates on ticket sales, DEI progress, and the launch of the Generations Capital Campaign. The meeting closed on a high note, recognizing Paine’s, Inc. and Forge City Works as outstanding community partners.
