The Hartford Symphony Orchestra announces the 42nd Young Artists Competition

HARTFORD, CT (November 18, 2019) – The Hartford Symphony Orchestra is excited to announce the 42nd Young Artists Competition! Students are invited to register from November 4, 2019 through January 31, 2020.

To be eligible, students must be Connecticut residents in grades 9-12 during the 2019-2020 academic year, cannot be a previous first place winner of the HSO’s Young Artists Competition and must play one of the following instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, trombone, bass trombone, tuba, alto saxophone, percussion, harp, piano, violin, viola, cello, or bass.

The preliminary prescreening round will consist of an online registration (or mailed application) and judging process beginning on November 4, 2019 and running through January 31, 2020. Students will be able to access and submit all forms and an audio submission of pre-approved repertoire at https://hartfordsymphony.org/education-community/student-opportunities/yac/. Candidates must also mail a $75 non-refundable application fee to Hartford Symphony Orchestra, ATTN: Young Artists Competition, 166 Capitol Avenue, Hartford, CT 06106 to be considered for the subsequent rounds.

The competition will take place in three rounds. The preliminary prescreening round will run from November 4, 2019 – January 31, 2020. The live semi-final round for advancing students is on Friday, May 29, 2020 at the Greater Hartford Arts Academy in Hartford, CT and is closed to the public. The final round will be a live performance in concert with the Hartford Symphony Orchestra on Saturday May 30, 2020 at the Theater for the Performing Arts at the Greater Hartford Arts Academy in Hartford, CT. Awards will be given to the top three finalists during the May 30, 2020 performance. The first-place winner will receive a $1,000 cash prize, and the possibility of performing at additional HSO events. The second and third-place winner will receive cash prizes of $750 and $500, respectively. All three winners will also win tickets to a Masterworks concert of their choice.

The 2019-2020 Young Artists Competition is sponsored in part by the Jean Sterling McRae Fund.

HSO programs are funded part by the Greater Hartford Arts Council’s United Arts Campaign, the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, and with support from the Department of Economic and Community Development, Connecticut Office of the Arts, which also receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
