Violinist Sooyeon Kim joined the Hartford Symphony Orchestra in 2019-2020 season as the Assistant Concertmaster. Sooyeon is a member of the Albany Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the New World Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra, and Kaleidoscope Chamber Orchestra. Sooyeon has held concertmaster and principal positions with the Juilliard Orchestra and the Juilliard Chamber Orchestra. During the summer, Sooyeon performs with the Verbier Festival Orchestra in Switzerland and has toured Germany and Denmark with the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival Orchestra. Sooyeon has performed under the baton of many renowned conductors including Simon Rattle, Valery Gergiev, Christoph Eschenbach, and Alan Gilbert.
An avid chamber musician, Sooyeon was a former participant in the Honors Chamber Music program at Juilliard and the Juilliard String Quartet Seminar. Her quartet has given performances throughout New York City, including Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, and has taken part of Juilliard’s 2018 Focus! Festival that featured contemporary compositions. Sooyeon has also appeared in Juilliard’s ChamberFest and with the Taos School of Music inNew Mexico where she performed and worked closely with members of the Borromeo,Brentano, Shanghai quartets and pianist Robert McDonald. Her other notable chamber coaches include Joseph Lin, Joel Smirnoff, and Sylvia Rosenberg.
Sooyeon has made solo appearances in Japan, Korea and Switzerland and has given numerous recitals at Lincoln Center. Sooyeon has won top prizes in the Music Teachers National Association Competition, the Friday Woodmere Music Club Young Artists Competition, and the New York Music Competition.
Sooyeon holds a B.M. and M.M. from the Juilliard School where she studied with Naoko Tanaka and Frank Huang.
