Hartford Symphony Orchestra presents STRAVINSKY & SWAN LAKE March 9-11
Join the HSO for a concert of music and movement! The Hartford Symphony Orchestra continues its 2017-2018 Masterworks season with Stravinsky & Swan Lake, Friday, March 9 through Sunday, March 11 in the Belding Theater at The Bushnell in Hartford. Visit hartfordsymphony.org for tickets and information.
These concerts will be led by HSO Music Director, Carolyn Kuan, and feature Boston Ballet dancers Yury Yanowsky and Dalay Parrondo. Join us for a pre-concert talk with Carolyn Kuan one hour prior to the concert.
This program includes Stravinsky’s ballet Game of Cards (Jeu de Cartes), as well as his Symphony in Three Movements, and Tchaikovsky’s Suite from Swan Lake, Op. 20a, TH 12.
Stravinsky’s engaging Game of Cards (Jeu de Cartes) ballet is said to have been motivated by his fondness for poker, with the main character being the cunning Joker. His turbulent Symphony in Three Movements was written as a direct response to the events of WWII. Stravinsky wrote the symphony in the final days of the war, influenced, as he wrote, by “our arduous time of sharp and shifting events, of despair and hope, of continual torments, of tension and, at last, cessation and relief…” Tchaikovsky revolutionized the art of composing for dance, and his Swan Lake is recognized as one of the most popular ballets in the world, inspired by Russian folk tales and one of the composer’s most beautiful works.
The 2017-2018 Masterworks Series is sponsored by The Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation.
