Hartford Symphony Orchestra presents Copley & Coney Island at the Wadsworth Atheneum May 17
HARTFORD, CT May 8, 2015 – The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will present Copley & Coney Island, the final concert of the 2014-2015 Sunday Serenades Chamber Music Series on Sunday, May 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford. Sunday Serenades Artistic Director and HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal will be joined by HSO Associate Concertmaster Lisa Rautenberg, HSO Principal Violist Michael Wheeler, HSO Assistant Principal Cellist Eric Dahlin, HSO Principal Clarinetist Curt Blood, HSO Principal Horn Barbara Hill and HSO Principal Pianist Margreet Francis for this performance.
Wadsworth’s exhibit Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland uses visual art as a lens to explore the lure that Coney Island exerted on American culture over a period of 150 years. From early depictions of “the people’s beach” by Impressionists William Merritt Chase and John Henry Twachtman to modern and contemporary images by photographers Diane Arbus and Walker Evans, the exhibit will investigate America’s playground as a place and an idea. Paired musical works include Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes, Copland’s Two Pieces, and Dohnányi’s Sextet, Op. 37.
Sunday Serenades chamber music concerts are presented in collaboration with the Wadsworth Atheneum of Art as a musical counterpart to special exhibitions and the permanent collections. Concerts take place in the museum galleries and feature Sunday Serenades Artistic Director and HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal and HSO musicians. The Sunday Serenades Chamber Music Series is made possible, in part, by the Helen M. Saunders Charitable Foundation Music Endowment at the Wadsworth Atheneum. The HSO’s collaboration with the Wadsworth Atheneum featuring images from the Coney Island exhibit is sponsored by the Richard P. Garmany Fund at Hartford Foundation for Public Giving.
