Hartford Symphony Orchestra opens its 2017-2018 Sunday Serenades Chamber Music Series with Strauss & The Sublime on November 19
The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will open its 2017-2018 Sunday Serenades Chamber Music Series with Strauss & The Sublime on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at 2 pm at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art in Hartford. A pre-concert gallery talk led but curator Oliver Tostmann will take place at 1 pm. For tickets and information, visit www.hartfordsymphony.org.
Sunday Serenades Artistic Director and HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal will be joined by Sharon Dennison on viola, Eric Dahlin on cello, and Margreet Francis on piano.
Our Sunday Serenades season opener takes inspiration from the exhibition Sublime North: Romantic Painters Discover Norway, which showcases the awe-inspiring talents of 19th-century Scandinavian artists as landscape painters. Grieg’s wistful Violin Sonata No. 1 in F Major, Op. 8 draws on Norwegian folk songs for inspiration, while Strauss’ Piano Quartet in C minor is gentle and aggressive, reflective of the Norwegian landscape. Halvorsen’s Handel’s Passacaglia is romantic and virtuosic.
Sunday Serenades chamber music concerts are presented in collaboration with the Wadsworth Atheneum as a musical counterpart to special exhibitions and the permanent collections. The Sunday Serenades chamber music series is made possible, in part, by the Helen M. Saunders Charitable Foundation Music Endowment at the Wadsworth Atheneum.
