Hartford Symphony Orchestra announces search for Assistant Conductor

HARTFORD, CT (July 1, 2015) – The Hartford Symphony Orchestra (HSO) announced today that it is launching a search for the position of Assistant Conductor. The HSO is establishing the position of Assistant Conductor to expand its reach in the Greater Hartford community, provide additional resources for concert programming and conducting, support development of education programs, and assist in strengthening stakeholder relationships. This is an integral position for the growth of the orchestra as the HSO implements a new Strategic Framework and related support structures. Deadline to apply is 5 p.m. EST on September 1, 2015. Scope of Services

  • Collaborate with Music Director, Director of Artistic Operations & Administration, Education Manager and other staff to support artistic planning, concert programming and education program development
  • Conduct rehearsals and performances for HSO Discovery, Pops, Talcott Mountain Music Festival and other concerts as assigned
  • Assist in providing cover conductor services as needed
  • Assist in producing and presenting Masterworks Series pre-concert discussions
  • Serve as a spokesperson and community liaison for the HSO in marketing campaigns, donor, sponsor and audience development

General Skills and Abilities Required

Professional level music preparation, conducting skills and knowledge of orchestral repertoire. Experience in music education programming and working in a variety of educational settings. Highly motivated to succeed, goal-oriented and able to inspire confidence on stage and in the community. Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills. Adept at establishing and maintaining strong relationships. Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities, perform well under pressure and meet deadlines.

Application Guidelines

Initial Application: Applicants interested in the position may submit a cover letter, resume, and video samples of their work.   Video samples should feature the applicant conducting an orchestra or similar ensemble in a minimum of two contrasting styles of music, either in complete performances or excerpts. Total video length should not exceed 30 minutes in duration.   Reference letters or other support materials will not be accepted at this time. Semi-Final Round
Following review of initial applications by a panel consisting of HSO Music Director, artistic staff and musicians, up to six semi-finalists will be selected and contacted no later than October 9, 2015. Semi-finalists will be required to conduct HSO musicians in a rehearsal format on Tuesday, November 10, 2015. Additional responsibilities and materials may be requested.

Final Round
Following completion of the semi-final round, three finalists will be selected and contacted no later than December 1, 2015. Finalists will conduct rehearsals and four concert performances January 18-24, 2016.  Additional activities may include meetings with HSO stakeholders and public speaking engagements during the concert week. An honorarium will be provided. The successful candidate will be notified no later than February 19, 2016 and offered a contract for services. Compensation is commensurate with experience.
