Former Music Director Michael Lankester to Lead HSO in Program of Elgar And Bruckner, March 20-23
Lankester, music director from 1985-2000, returns to celebrate the HSO’s 70th season – leading two pieces of expressive personality: Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bruckner’s Third Symphony
HARTFORD, March 19, 2014 – The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will continue its 70th Anniversary Season with guest conductor and former music director Michael Lankester guest conducting Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bruckner’s Symphony No. 3, Thursday, March 20 – Sunday, March 23, 2014 at The Bushnell Center for Performing Arts. Lankester served as music director of the HSO from 1985 to 2000.
Michael Lankester makes his triumphant return to the Hartford Symphony Orchestra to lead two pieces of expressive personality. Lankester’s fellow Englishman Edward Elgar dedicated his Enigma Variations to “my friends pictured within” – and made each variation an affectionate portrayal. This is followed after intermission by Anton Bruckner’s grand, dramatic, and brassy Third Symphony.
Michael Lankester enjoys an eminent, international career as composer, arranger and commentator for special projects in opera, theater and broadcasting. For fifteen years, he served as music director of the Hartford Symphony Orchestra and the Hartford Chamber Orchestra. Since leaving the HSO, Mr. Lankester has appeared as guest conductor with the symphony orchestras of London, Pittsburgh, Toronto, Seattle, Syracuse, Indianapolis, Southwest Florida, Edmonton, Singapore, Bulgaria and Costa Rica. Mr. Lankester made his American debut with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, rising during an eight-year tenure from assistant conductor to conductor-in-residence. He was also the music director of the National Theater of Great Britain. Lankester additionally served as conductor for the inaugural production of Tom Stoppard’s play Every Good Boy Deserves Favour (music by André Previn), with subsequent performances in Atlanta, Chicago, Cleveland, and Minneapolis. Michael Lankester studied at the Royal College of Music with Sir Adrian Boult and Sir Malcolm Sargent. He served on the faculty of the Royal College of Music as professor of conducting and head of opera. For twelve years, he conducted Contrapuncti, his own chamber orchestra, giving numerous performances throughout Great Britain and Europe.
