The HSO kicks off its 2016-2017 season with a program of music with global flair! Rimsky-Korsakov’s Capriccio espagnol is one of the most famous orchestra showpieces, a vividly brilliant composition based on Spanish folk melodies. Inspired by the collection of Middle Eastern and Indian tales “The Thousand and One Nights,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade brings to vibrant life the story of the young wife of a Sultan who tells tales to her husband to forestall his plan to kill her. Rodrigo’s extraordinarily beautiful Concierto de Aranjuez for Guitar and Orchestra is unquestionably his best known work, and established his reputation as one of the most significant Spanish composers of the 20th century. Don’t miss artist Sarah Paolucci’s exhibit in the lobby, featuring gorgeous paintings of HSO musicians’ hands!
Please join us for a pre-concert talk, led by HSO Music Director Carolyn Kuan, one hour prior to curtain each day.

The return of Casey’s Classics
Recommended recordings for your listening pleasure!
Curious about what you will be hearing on the concert program, or want to hear more? Coleman Casey, HSO’s dear friend, Director Emeritus and beloved in-house audiophile, offers the following recommendations for recordings of selections featured on our upcoming Masterworks Concert:
Two masterpieces by Rimsky-Korsakov, his Scheherazade and Capriccio Espagnol, can happily be found together on a really wonderful recording with Sir Charles Mackerras and the London Symphony Orchestra, captured in brilliant digital sound on TELARC. Another favorite recording of Scheherazade alone is the classic recording with Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in sound that defies its age (RCA).
Rodrigo’s charming Concierto de Aranjuez is memorably performed by the American guitarist Sharon Isbin accompanied by Jose Serebrier and the New
York Philharmonic, recorded in lovely sound on the WARNER label.
