As World War II caused devastation and displacement in Europe, Surrealists produced powerfully disturbing artwork. Similarly to the visual artwork of the time, Poulenc’s Violin Sonata strives to depict graphic scenes and ideas through intensely precise writing. String Trio No. 2 by Hindemith is contemplative and graceful, and Korngold’s effervescent Piano Quintet, Op. 15 incorporates the same heroism and dramaticsm of the composer’s Academy Award winning film scores.
