Carolyn Kuan and Mickey Mouse to Share the Stage at Disney’s Fantasia October 26
HSO POPS! Series Opener to Feature Live Music Choreographed to Movie Clips from Disney’s Fantasia and Fantasia 2000
HARTFORD, October 21, 2013 –The Hartford Symphony Orchestra POPS! Series will open with Disney’s Fantasia: Live in Concert on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. in Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Conducted by HSO Music Director Carolyn Kuan, the program will feature live music choreographed to movie clips from Disney’s Fantasia and Fantasia 2000.
Walt Disney’s inspiration for Fantasia was the idea of “music you hear, and pictures you see.” Production began in 1937 with The Sorcerer’s Apprentice featuring Mickey Mouse and music by the Philadelphia Orchestra with conductor Leopold Stokowski. As animation continued, Disney and Stokowski realized that one segment would not be enough, and expanded to other musical pieces. Despite challenges in production and initial dismissal from the press, ultimately Fantasia was considered a masterpiece and is the 22nd highest-grossing film of all time.
In the 1990’s, Disney began work on a sequel to Fantasia, titled Fantasia 2000; the final version was released in 1999. The soundtrack was performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra with conductor James Levine. It was the first full length animated film to be released in IMAX format.
The HSO will perform live music with accompanying movie clips projected over the orchestra, with selections from both iconic films. The excerpts will include selections from Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 and 6, Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker Suite, Debussy’s Claire de Lune, Stravinsky’s The Firebird Suite, Ponchielli’s Dance of the Hours, Dukas’ The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance, and Respighi’s Pines of Rome.
