John Michael Flavetta

Assistant Principal 

A native of Birmingham, Alabama, John Michael Flavetta joined the Hartford Symphony in 2014 at the age of 20. He is a third-generation professional horn player and received degrees from the New England Conservatory (B.M.) and Rice University (M.M.). His primary teachers were William VerMeulen, Richard Sebring, and Jason Snider. While a student, John Michael spent summers as a Fellow at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts and the Pacific Music Festival in Japan.

John Michael has been featured as a soloist with the Hartford Symphony and regularly performs chamber music as a member of the HSO Wind Quintet, creating unique and engaging programs to reach audiences of all ages.

John Michael frequently travels to Maine where he plays Third horn with the Portland Symphony. He has performed as a guest musician with the Boston Symphony and Houston Symphony and is regularly hired throughout the New England area as a freelance musician.

When not making music, John Michael spends his time baking and trying new recipes with his wife, Geanna; taking their dog, Bocce, on walks and exploring the state of Connecticut with all its beautiful nature and world-class museums.
