HARTFORD, February 26, 2014 – The Hartford Symphony Orchestra POPS! Series will pay tribute to rock legend Billy Joel in The Music of Billy Joel & More Saturday, March 8, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. in Mortensen Hall at The Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Fronted by Broadway’s Movin’ Out star Michael Cavanaugh and conducted by The Hartt School’s Director of Bands Glen Adsit, the program will highlight hits from the “Piano Man” and other rock n’ roll icons such as Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Who, and Elton John.

Since 1973, with the release of Piano Man, five time Grammy Award winner and Tony Award Winner Billy Joel has been topping the U.S. musical charts with such hits as “Uptown Girl,” “Only the Good Die Young,” and, of course, “Piano Man.”

The HSO will be joined by Michael Cavanaugh, best known for his starring role in the Broadway musical Movin’ Out. Cavanaugh was hand-picked by Billy Joel to star in title role and appeared in the show for three years and more than 1,200 performances, culminating in 2003 with both Grammy and Tony award nominations.  He was called “the new voice of the American Rock and Roll Songbook” by Billboard Magazine.

With a voice and sound that evokes a style rivaling the “Piano Man,” Cavanaugh and the HSO will reinterpret the modern pop-rock song book, including such hits as “Movin’ Out,” “She’s Got a Way,” “New York State of Mind,” and “Just the Way You Are.” With the addition of the rich sounds of the HSO, the concert will put an eloquent twist on these rock classics.

Glen Adsit is the Director of Bands at The Hartt School where he conducts the Wind Ensemble and the Foot in the Door ensemble and guides all aspects of the graduate wind conducting degrees. Professor Adsit was appointed the Director of Bands at The Hartt School in the Fall of 2000 following an appointment as the Associate Director of Bands at the University of New Mexico. From 1986 to 1992 he taught at both the junior high and high school levels in the Plymouth-Canton School District in Michigan.
