Program to Feature Violinist Peter Winograd, Son of Former HSO Music Director Arthur Winograd

HARTFORD, November 1, 2013 –The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will continue their 70th Anniversary Season with the music of Beethoven and Bernstein Thursday-Sunday, November 7-10, 2013 in The Belding Theater at the Bushnell Center for the Performing Arts. Led by HSO music director Carolyn Kuan, this program will include Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony, Bernstein’s music for the ballet Fancy Free, and Piazzolla’s Four Seasons of Buenos Aires featuring American String Quartet violinist Peter Winograd.

In addition to the pre-concert talks given by Maestra Kuan Thursday- Saturday, on Sunday, November 10 she will be joined by WFCR Classical Host John Montanari for a special pre-concert talk about Beethoven and Bernstein, as well as the HSO’s 70th Anniversary Season. Pre-concert talks are held one hour prior to every masterworks series performance and are free for ticket holders.

Violinist Peter Winograd joined the American String Quartet in 1990. Born into a gifted musical family, his mother was a professional pianist, and his father was the founding cellist of the Juilliard Quartet and Music Director of the Hartford Symphony from 1964-1985. Peter Winograd was a top prize winner in the 1988 Naumburg International Violin Competition. He has been a member of the violin and chamber music faculties of the Manhattan School of Music and the Aspen Music School (where the American is Quartet-in-Residence) since 1990. He holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Juilliard. His violin is by Giovanni Maria del Bussetto (Cremona, 1675).

Violinist Peter Winograd is the son of former HSO Music Director Arthur Winograd, who led the HSO from 1964-1985. This program will be the first of three honoring past HSO Music Directors. Michael Lankester, Director of the HSO from 1985-2000, will conduct Elgar’s Enigma Variations and Bruckner’s Third Symphony March 20-23. Edward Cumming, Director of the HSO from 2001-2011, will conduct Brahms’ Double Concerto, plus Dvorak’s Symphony No. 6 and Slavonic Dances May 8-11.
